A Community Transformed

Every man, woman, and child deserves clean water. Waterborne diseases don't discriminate by gender. While children and women are the most vulnerable, men in East Africa also struggle with the waterborne disease crisis—in sickness, but also in the innate desire to protect and provide for their families.

Below, Stephen Mwita, a village elder in Nyasangai, Tanzania, shares the difficulties his family and community faced before receiving clean and safe water.

Stephen said that prior to Hydrating Humanity protecting a nearby spring, families depended on contaminated water sources (see above,) and many children in the village regularly suffered from stomach sickness, diarrhea, and other waterborne illnesses. Children under the age of five were especially vulnerable, he noted.

His own family was deeply affected, as his wife and infant child were frequently admitted to the hospital because of illnesses after drinking unsafe water. The repeated medical expenses placed a heavy financial burden on the family.

But today, he is able to express heartfelt gratitude to the donors and everyone who contributed toward protecting the spring near his home and bringing clean water to the community.

According to Stephen, a long-term problem that affected the entire village has finally been addressed. Today, families in the community are able to drink safe water, and Stephen believes waterborne diseases have been greatly reduced. He also expressed appreciation for the health and hygiene training provided by our social workers during their visit to the village.

Quoting Bible scripture (Hosea 4:6), Stephen said, “My people perish due to lack of knowledge,” explaining how important our hygiene education was for the community.

Stephen ended his conversation with us by praying that, "Almighty God would richly bless all those who contributed to making clean water possible for my village."
